Comparison Study of in-vivo and in-vitro Techniques for the Assessment of Internal Exposures of Actinides

چکیده
In-vivo measurements of actinides are carried out in the CIEMAT Whole Body Counting facility, using a Low Energy germanium detection system (LE Ge) to evaluate the Activity of Am in lungs and skeleton. The sensitivity of the LE Ge detection system in the assessment of the Americium retained in the body is associated to the Minimum Detectable Activity (MDA) estimated in the different available in-vivo counting geometries (lung, skull, knee); inherent difficulties found and solved in these estimations will be discussed. An appropriate QA (Quality Assurance) methodology is applied to guarantee the good performance and sensitivity of the LE Ge system in routine monitoring. Alpha Spectrometry is the most widely used technique for measurement of activity in excreta samples for monitoring of occupational exposure to actinides. The in-vitro Bioassay Laboratory of CIEMAT has been participating in intercomparison exercises since 1998. The results obtained represent the validation of the radiochemical separation methods and the measurement techniques. On the other hand, a study on the MDA reached in routine measurement of actinides is also discussed. In the case of excreta samples, this study is carried out in urine samples corresponding to the monitoring of personnel involved in the decommissioning of a nuclear power plant in Spain. The sensitivity and applications of in-vivo and in-vitro techniques in case of internal exposures of actinides are compared, especially in the case of occupational inhalation of Am The aim of this comparison study is to provide adequate occupational monitoring programmes. These programmes are established in the perspective of the application of ICRP78 recommendations and fulfilling the Spanish Regulations.

Exposure to occupational and environmental contaminants is a major contributor to human health problems. Despite significant achievements in the risk assessment of chemicals, the toxicological database, particularly for industrial chemicals, remains limited. Considering there areapproximately 80, 000 chemicals in commerce, and an extremely large number of chemical mixtures, in vivo testing of t...
متن کاملIn vitro and in vivo study of the antibacterial effects of Nigella sativa methanol extract in dairy cow mastitis
Objective: Nigella Sativa (N. Sativa) seeds were used in traditional medicine for the treatment of a variety of diseases. The seed extracts and oil of this plant have shown various pharmacological properties including antimicrobial actions. In this study, the in vitro and in vivo antibacterial effects of methanol extract of the seeds against pathogenic bacteria causing mastitis in cows have bee...
متن کاملComparison of in vitro and in situ techniques for estimating protein degradability of selected feedstuffs
The objective of this study was to estimate the protein degradability parameters of 6 common ruminant feedstuff using the nylon bags (in situ) and the innovative in vitro method-the DaisyII incubator. Significant differences were observed between the in situ and in vitro methods in estimation of the rapidly soluble (a) fraction (Pin vitro method were highly correlated with the estimated values ...
متن کاملRESISTANCE OF PLASMODIUM FALCIPARUM TO CHLOROQUINE IN SOUTH EASTERN IRAN
In vivo and in vitro assessments of the response of P. falciparum to chloroquine using WHO standard kits and techniques were carried out in I ran Shahr, Sistan and Baluchestan province of Iran in 1985. In the in vivo assessment, 24 malaria patients treated with chloroquine (25mg/kg over three days) were followed up for one to four weeks. The mean parasite clearance time was 4.3 days and in...
متن کاملGenotoxicity assessment of Elaeagnus angustifolia L. fruit extract (senjed) nanocapsule by in vitro and in vivo methods
Background: Although initial studies on Elaeagnus Angustifolia L. Fruit Extract (Senjed) Nanocapsule showed its efficacy in osteoporosis in rat model as well as its significant role in elevating the serum calcium levels, there is no study on its possible genotixic potentials which is necessary for developing all nanopharmaceuticals. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the genotoxicity of Se...
